 2023 Preview 


       Southside completed the 2022 season with a 5-6 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region six, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Southside's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Ramsay by a score of 61-25.

       Since 2010, Southside has gone a combined 75-66. Their 53.2% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 5A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Southside has managed to compile a record of 109-153. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 36th in Class 5A and 260th in the AHSAA.




       The Panthers are led by head coach Miles Holcomb who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 10-12 over the past two seasons at Southside. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Holcomb. Over the course of his career, Coach Holcomb's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times .

       Southside returns its quarterback, running back and most of their receivers in 2023 so the Panthers will be loaded on offense. Coach Holcomb has a great group of seniors returning and the Panthers should be better on both sides of the ball this season. Tough non-region games with Guntersville, Boaz and Etowah will only serve to get the team ready for the playoffs.

       The Panthers have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region six this season.

      QB Brooks Nesmith will be returning after completing 134 of 231 passes for 2,054 yards last season along with 21 touchdowns. He also ran for another 603 yards and scored 9 TDs.

      Mason Teague will be back this season at running back after rushing for 1,422 yards and 13 TDs in 2022.

      Receiver Jordan Bryan will return after grabbing 30 passes good for 491 yards and 7 TDs as a sophomore last season.

       The Panthers open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Guntersville on Friday, August 25 at Chorba-Lee Stadium. Last year the Guntersville Wildcats finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in third place in Class 5A region seven. The Wildcats lost in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs to Ramsay by a score of 45-9.

       Southside and Guntersville have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 4-7-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2022 with Guntersville winning by a score of 21-7.

      

       The Panthers return 5A All-State Senior athlete Gauge Nesmith. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

Alabama School for the Deaf won Deaf School National Championships in 1971, 1987, 1991, 2000, 2001 and 2002.
